Sea forts, hill forts — all the logistics in one place

Raigad Fort has a ropeway. Murud Janjira needs a boat. Revdanda is a 10-minute walk from the road. Entry fees, timings, and nearest stays — compared here before you book anything.

Hill fort — ropeway access

Raigad Fort

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's capital fort, 820 m above sea level near Mahad. Ropeway runs 8am–5:30pm; raigad ropeway ticket costs ₹350 return for adults. Arrive before 9am — the cable car queue doubles by mid-morning.

Entry: ₹25 (Indian nationals). Drive time from Mumbai: 3.5 hrs via NH66 to Mahad. Nearest stays in Mahad town — book 2 weeks ahead on weekends.

Sea fort — boat access only

Murud Janjira Fort

The only coastal fort in India never conquered — sitting on a basalt island 90m offshore at Murud. Shared boats depart Rajpuri jetty from 7am; last return around 5pm. Murud janjira fort information: entry is free, boat fare ₹40–60 per person.

Drive from Mumbai: 3 hrs to Murud via Alibaug ferry or NH66. Stay in Murud — a handful of sea-facing guesthouses book out fast on long weekends.

Coastal fort — walk-in access

Revdanda Fort

Portuguese-era fort at the mouth of the Kundalika river, 8km from Alibaug. No entry fee, no ropeway, no queue — walk in any time. Best light is 6–8am before heat builds. The creek-facing bastions are largely intact.

Drive: 1.5 hrs from Mumbai via ferry to Alibaug. Alibaug resorts within 15 minutes serve as the logical base — book via Booking.com or Agoda for weekend rates.
