Murud Janjira: The Sea Fort That Never Fell
Built on a tidal island 90m offshore, Janjira held off Maratha, Portuguese, and British fleets. Today you reach it the same way: a shared wooden boat from Rajpuri jetty, 25 minutes each way.

Walls intact. Interior open. Budget 2–3 hours.
Malik Ambar's Siddi commanders built 22 bastions across a 22-acre island. The outer sea walls are fully intact; the inner palace and mosque are open ruins. No ropeway, no crowd-control gates — you walk the perimeter freely.
The fort never surrendered in recorded history. Arrive early — the 8am boat carries a fraction of the midday crowd, and the stone is cooler before 10am.
Wear closed shoes — the basalt paths are uneven. No food stalls inside the fort; carry water from Rajpuri before boarding.
Last return boat: 5:30pm. Do not miss it.

Murud town has a handful of guesthouses — adequate, not memorable. Most visitors base themselves in Alibaug, drive down for the morning boat, and return by afternoon. Book early on weekends; the better properties fill Thursday night.
